Ohne Übertreibung dürfte D & D locker eines der einflussreichsten Popkultur-Phänomene des 20 Jahrhunderts sein – und die Einflüsse dieses ersten kommerziell erhältlichen Fantasy-Rollenspiels reichen viel weiter, als eine enorm vielfältige Rollenspiel-Szene losgetreten zu haben, welche in den letzten (beinahe) 50 Jahren eine bemerkenswerte Evolution durchgemachte.Auch bei zahlreichen, mittlerweile komplett selbstverständlich zu Alltagskultur gehörenden, Computerspielen finden sich erstmals bei D & D formulierte Axiome wieder, und ob (beispielsweise) „Der Herr Der Ringe“ oder meinetwegen auch „A Game Of Thrones“ derart populär wären, wenn D & D und die tausenden in seinem Kielwasser entstandenen Spiele keinen neuen Fantasy-Boom begründet hätte, mag bezweifelt werden.Fakt ist: nicht nur die „Nerd“-Subkultur, auch die ganz allgemeine popkulturelle Landschaft sähe grundlegend anders aus, wenn TSR nicht Anfang der 70er mit D & D auf den Markt gekommen wäre. ART & ARCANA geht dabei auch auf Spin-Offs wie die Computerspiele und den D & D Merchandise ein, und auch einige sehr schräge Schätze aus der D & D Geschichte wurden ans Tageslicht befördert.Auch die Texte lesen sich gut – ART & ARCANA ist ein Buch, in dem man sich wunderbar festlesen kann, und es macht Freude, der bewegten Geschichte von D & D durch die Jahrzehnte zu folgen.ART & ARCANA ist also wesentlich mehr als „nur“ ein Bildband (wenn man sich nur für die Cover von Larry Elmore begeistert seien auch eher die hierzu spezialisierten Bildbände empfohlen), sondern ein echtes Monument für eines der einflussreichsten Spiele aller Zeiten.Gerade zu diesem phantastischen Preis sollten Interessenten zuschlagen!

Hier waren wirklich Fans und Experten am Werk, die sich Mühe gegeben haben, einen umfassenden Überblick über das berühmteste Rollenspiel zu geben und liebevoll Skurrilitäten wie auch grafische Meisterwerke zu sammeln und zu präsentieren. Selbst der größte Experte wird hier noch viel Neues entdecken, z.B. rare Fotoaufnahmen aus der Frühzeit von TSR oder Kritzelein der ersten Dungeon Master, skurrile Werbungen und viele Blicke hinter die Kulissen. Der Neuling wiederum wird umfassend und korrekt über die komplexe Geschichte von D&D informiert, wobei auch die verschiedenen Konflikte und finanziellen Krisen hinter den Kulissen nicht beschönigt werden. Das Ganze lässt auch vom Layout und der Präsentation nichts zu wünschen übrig, und es gibt viele nette Ideen, wie zum Beispiel die grafische Evolution der ikonischsten Monster aus D&D. Ganz besonders empfohlen!!!
Wenn man ein wenig in die Geschichte der Bilder und Designs von D&D eintauchen möchte und der Nostalgie fröhnen will, ist das hier genau das richtige.Nicht nur das man das Teil durchaus als Schlagwaffe nutzen kann so schwer ist es, auch die Aufmachung ist wirklich gelungen.Nichts was man unbedingt lesen muss, gucken reicht auch aus, aber die vielen kleinen Infos zum Werdegang von D&D sind das Salz in der Suppe dieses Buches.
Tolles Buch, dass einen detaillierten Einblick in die Entstehungsgeschichte von Dungeons and Dragons gibt. Umfangreich, mit vielen Bildern, Fotos und Dokumenten, tollem Druck und natürlich viel Artwork der bekannten Künstler.
Recently I got into the idea of playing DnD and so I started to get invested in this game. This ended up in buying Starter Set, Player's Handbook and eventually - this book. It's all I expected and I really liked it. It was interesting to read about the history of DnD and what ups and downs it had. Moreover, the art is wonderful and exciting and tells a story on it's own.
Heard about this book from the podcast "Wired: Geek's Guide to the Galaxy", had to have it for my self b-day present. Great buy, worth it, brought back so many memories and now my son is interested in playing D&D

A lot of trivia on history of Dungeons and Dragons and many interesting images. Yet, it is rather for those doing first forays into the history of D&D than very serious researchers. Very well executed, nicely set.
